What is in a name?
Group Leaders are at the heart of all u3as, and the name describes the person that fronts a group, but they could equally be called Group Coordinator or Group Facilitator.
Can anyone be a Group Leader?
The simple answer is Yes, and we have lots of ways that we can help you become one. These include co-leading an existing group, starting a new subject group or developing a group from an existing waiting list.
Do I need special skills?
Again, the simple answer is No but being able to email, collect fees when necessary and engaging with group members is helpful. You do not need to be an expert in the subject of the group just enthusiastic to help fellow members get the most out of the group.
Groups come in many varieties:
There is no such thing as a standard group, groups are as varied as the days in a year but at their heart are people who want to Live, Laugh and maybe Learn a little. Some groups are led by members with knowledge and expertise, but most are led by members that just like playing a sport or game, enjoying a coffee or a glass of wine.
- Knowledge: Being curious is a human condition that does not diminish with age. Knowledge based groups are often led by a member with expertise in a particular subject or skill but not exclusively. Enthusiasm is equally important.
- Coffee, Wine and Games: Many groups have a high social element, and these groups mainly require a person to act as a contact point. While the leader may suggest a meeting location, future locations often come from the group and the more the group is involved the easier it becomes because participation is an underpinning u3a principle.
- Sports, Walks and Dance: We all know how important exercise is in our lives and participating in such activities is a great way to make new friends. Like the previous statement the leaders act mainly as a contact point though some activities do have location or route planning involved.
Rewarding:
u3a plays a vital role in combating social isolation and promoting mental and physical well-being amongst members. By leading a group, you'll be helping to create a healthy, more vibrant and connected community of members.
